Sardinia 08      I was looking for an opportunity to take advantage of Easyjet's new route to Sardinia.  Whilst searching through the usual 'self guided walking holidays costing £500 - £600 + air fare + getting to the start via public transport!!  Well, I came across what looks like a very good deal from a couple of Brits over there and if I can get 4 or 6 others to come along all transport to and from walks etc and pick up from the airport will be shared etc.  Plus ofcourse the benefit of the shared experience with friends!  Interested then check it out at WWW.peteranne.it and contact me:  Rod.carne@brillopad.co.uk - 01278-783270.  Best time to go is possibly prior to mid June or mid Sept.  Rod Carne
Help us to help you - As the programme, newsletter and other papers are now available on this website (and usually a couple of weeks before the postal distribution) you can opt to receive an email telling you that the latest editions are up on the site rather than wait to have them sent to you in the post. This will save the Group considerable time, effort and money.

If you would like to receive your information this way, just email:- roger@tauntonramblers.org.uk with the word WEBMAIL in the subject line and he will do the rest. Thanks

Footpath Maintenance & Clearance

Paul Wright our Footpath Secretary recently had a meeting with Andy Stevenson, Somerset County Council’s (SCC) Rights of Way Ranger to discuss how members of this Group could assist in the construction of stiles, kissing gates, erection of finger posts etc plus general footpath clearance. Gus Halfhyde from the Mendip Group was also there to tell us how his Group, who have been carrying out this work for several years, operates with Mendip District Council.

Gus told us that over seven years his group has improved its expertise so that they now operate two gangs on a regular basis who work by themselves but in close liaison with the Mendip Footpath Officer. A work programme is agreed with the footpath officer and one gang meets every Tuesday for a full day erecting or repairing stiles, kissing gates, footbridges, walkways etc and the other gang meets every other week to clear obstructed footpaths. They now work without supervision from the Mendip Council but this has not always been the case as they have had to win the confidence of the council by working safely and with the approval of the landowners and general public.

SCC would now like to extend this involvement in footpath maintenance to Taunton Deane. We used to do some clearance and footpath repair when the Borough Council were responsible for footpaths. Now the County Council is responsible other people are involved with their own ways of doing things. A training day is being arranged when a couple of stiles and/or a finger post will be erected and health and safety issues and other matters will be explained. Paul would like to know who would be interested in attending. He would also like to know who might like to lead a gang and to liase with the SCC on work programme etc.

Please let him know, either on 01823 667554 or at email
