CAMPAIGNS
Everyone knows that the Ramblers' Association promotes walking but less is appreciated about its campaigning role.
At any one time several different national campaigns are underway and details of these can be obtained from the Ramblers' Association website or by clicking the relevant boxes in the table below

Somerset Campaign

In response to the continuing poor state of the county's network of footpaths and other Rights of Way a FOOTPATH CAMPAIGN was launched in Somerset in late 2005. The extent of the problem had been highlighted by figures submitted to the Audit commission from the county council in 2003/4, which showed just 39% of paths were "easy to use". As a consequence Somerset was ranked 33rd out of 34 county councils!

Under the guidance of Adrian Morris from Ramblers' Association head office, interested members first gathered together in December 2005. At a subsequent meeting in February 2006 a detailed strategy list of aims, research, communication and lobbying was discussed.

It is recognised that no "short term fix" is possible and that increasing funding is central. However raising the profile of footpath work is tough in an environment where councils face ever increasing demands on their funds from a general public very sensitive to tax increases! The situation is not helped by the fact that money for footpath work is not "ring-fenced" so that even establishing the current level of spending is far from straightforward.

A multi-faceted approach is being adopted. Communication with all interested parties and the media, and research to establish current financing, policy and practice, are essential components of any lobbying campaign. There are a great number of different ways in which individuals can contribute to the campaign as a whole. So whatever your background or experience there will be something for of interest for you to do.

In the 18 months between spring 2006 and autumn 2007 walkers are invited to walk paths in England and Wales, which have been divided up into mangeable kilometre grid squares, and to report any problems they come across to the relevant highway authority. This is NOT a survey and detailed reports on the conditions of paths is not required. Walkers, either individuals or groups, "sign up" on the web pages dedicated to the challenge to report each kilometre square that they have completed.
COASTAL ACCESS

More information on Coastal Access
England and Wales have approximately 4,400km or 2,700 miles of coastline and estuaries. Contrary to popular belief, there is no general right to walk on beaches or the foreshore in England and Wales, though such a right exists in Scotland. The Ramblers’ Association believes that there should be a legal right of access to coastal areas in England and Wales – including beaches, foreshore, cliffs, dunes, banks, barriers, estuaries and mud flats. A legal right of access around the coast would give clarity and certainty and open up more of the coast for the public to enjoy.
