WALKS in MARCH 2008

Sunday 2nd March               Easy                     6 ½ miles         3 ½ hours          

Short First: Blagdon Lake, Butcombe.  Circular walk from the northern end of the Lake via Butcombe, fields and quiet lanes with superb views.  Coffee stop.  Lunch by Lake at end of walk.  Dogs allowed under control

Meet:  10.00 a.m. Blagdon Lake corner of dam and Park Lane.  From Station Road pass the Fire Station and continue downhill out of the village.  Park Lane is 2nd right turn just before dam.  Explorer 141 for parking. Grid Ref. ST504597.  Walk is mainly on Explorer 154

Sunday 2nd March               Easy/Moderate       9 ½ miles

Blackdown Heights.  Woodland and field walk, can be muddy. Possible pub lunch. Large car park.  Bluebells in the spring with lots of other wild flowers. Some climbing.  Good views of the Vale of Taunton, Quantocks and Brendons

Sunday 09 March               Moderate/hard        10 miles           5 hrs

Burrington and Cheddar.

Walking along the top of both Burrington Combe and Cheddar Gorge.  (the less frequently walked side of the Gorge)  Hilly, with great views, weather permitting.  The start is a steep uphill stretch with muddy parts. No Dogs allowed.

Sunday 16th March             Hard                      14 miles           6-7 hours

Williton, Carhampton, Blue Anchor incorporating a Floodlit footpath

With the days now lengthening step into Spring for a walk, which takes in the foothills of the Brendons to the Somerset coast.  Generally firm underfoot though with a few small streams to cross.  Bring refreshments though the leader has planned for a pub stop.  On return to Williton the walk follows a floodlit footpath!!! 

Meet:  09:30 near the Church.  A39 to Williton along the main street where it meets the A358 then immediately left into Bridge Street and immediately right into a lane, parking between the School and Church.  (Further along the lane is the Bakelite Museum)  Explorer OL9 (Exmoor) Grid Ref. Wednesday 19th March.     Easy to moderate. 5-6 miles.         3 to 4 hours

Mid-week Walk:  Winscombe and surrounding hills. An easy pace, please bring a picnic lunch.  Dogs allowed under control.

Quantock Hills.  A mixture of heath, woods and undulating countryside.  Starting at Triscombe ascending to Cothelstone Hill (steep climb at the beginning)  Through villages of Cothelstone and West Bagborough.  Dogs allowed under control

Vale of Pewsey – Bishops Cannings

Walking the riverside, climbing to Adam’s Grave Long Barrow and following part of the White Horse Trail.  No dogs allowed.

Meet:  10.00 Bishops Cannings.  Chandlers Lane   M4 Jct.16. then East B4004 to A361.  Follow A361 south, across the A4. Continue south to Bishops Cannings turn into Chandlers lane.  Parking along road in village or possibly in the Pub. Post code   SN10  2JZ.  Explorer 157. Grid Ref.  SU037641.
